Interwork between M3UA and M2PA

Does your signaling node only supports M2PA? and you want to connect to another signaling node that supports M3UA? There may be a case when you own a product that supports only one of the SIGTRAN signaling protocols, either M3UA or M2PA. However, to implement a new signaling connection or service, your node needs to communicate with another node that doesn’t support the same SIGTRAN signaling protocol. In such a case, a gateway is needed that can convert M3UA to M2PA and vice-versa.

The M2PA protocol operates at Layer 2 just like MTP2 protocol of the SS7 stack. On the other hand, M3UA protocol operates at Layer 3 just like the MTP3 protocol of the SS7 stack. Due to the difference of the layers at which these protocols operate, the conversion is not direct and becomes complicated as lot of routing information is embedded in the signaling messages.
